A residual current device that trips has measured current leaking away. Nine times out of ten that is a damp outdoor circuit, a failing water heater or a broken appliance. Replacing the device alone does not solve that; we look for where it is leaking first.
We switch off circuit by circuit and measure the insulation resistance. That leads us to the circuit and often to the appliance causing it. If the device itself no longer trips on its test button, it is due for replacement.
Boards from before 1975 often have no residual current protection at all. Then adding a device or replacing the board is not a luxury: it is the protection that shields you from an electric shock.
